    • PhD (NUS)
    • FRCS (Edinburgh)
    • FRCS (Glasgow)
    • DLO (London)

A/Prof Low is currently Adjunct Associate Professor with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. A highly regarded ear specialist, he had performed several hundreds of cochlear implantation surgeries including the first paediatric cochlear implant in Singapore.

He completed his ENT specialist medical training in Singapore and in England in 1995, he went on to Australia for advanced training in treating ear conditions like hearing loss, vertigo (giddiness), tinnitus (noise in ear), ear infections and tumours. His interest in the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine in modern ENT practice also led him to become a registered acupuncturist. He was awarded a PhD for his achievements in research relating to hearing health.

Before deciding in 2011 to go into private practice, A/Prof Low worked full time in the public health sector. At the Singapore General Hospital, he had completed two terms as Head of the ENT Department and had won “Service with a Heart" awards for excellent service in patient care. Working with the Ministry of Health, he was instrumental in establishing Singapore’s Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme and the National Cochlear Implant Programme. Academically, he had taken on several leadership roles in the training and education of ENT doctors. He had also published extensively, with more than 70 peer-reviewed ENT papers in local and international journals. His academic interests self-motivate him to keep abreast with the latest developments in the management of ENT disorders.

A/Prof Low received a long service award in 2012 from the National Council of Social Service, in recognition of his volunteer services to the community. This included completing 2 terms as President of the Singapore Association for the Deaf.

    FAQ

    • Is my ear symptom due to a tumour?

It is usually not due to a tumour. Nevertheless, a patient with a tumour arising from the hearing nerve (acoustic neuroma), middle ear (glomus tumour) or nose (nasopharyngeal carcinoma) commonly complains of hearing loss, tinnitus or blocked ear sensation on that side.

    • I have vertigo. Am I suffering from a stroke?

Although strokes can sometimes present as vertigo, the majority of patients with vertigo have other causes particularly those arising from ear structures. These include conditions like benign paroxysmal position vertigo, vestibular neuronitis and Meniere’s Disease.

    • Is it true that nothing can be done for tinnitus?

It is not true. Depending on the root cause, tinnitus can sometimes be cured. The disturbance caused by tinnitus can often be alleviated by the appropriate treatment.

    • My precious baby has failed a hearing screening test. Can your Clinic help?

Certainly! Our Clinic offers a range of objective tests that can accurately test hearing and to determine the severity of hearing loss if any. Effective intervention then follows which often results in deaf children subsequently developing good speech and language and doing well in school.

    • Can acupuncture help?

Having been formally educated in both Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, A/Prof Low has reasons to believe that acupuncture has a complementary role in the treatment of selected patients with certain ear symptoms.

    • Can stem cells be used to treat permanent hearing loss?

With formal education in a PhD programme focusing on the basic sciences in ear health including the cellular and molecular processes involved in hearing loss, A/Prof Low is of the opinion that they may have a role for selected patients not now but in the not too distant future.

    • As a sub-specialist for the ear, does A/Prof Low still see patients complaining of nose/sinus, throat and head/neck symptoms?

Yes, he does. Since completion of training as an Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) Specialist in 1995, A/Prof Low has also been regularly managing patients with other ENT problems. These included nose/sinus (eg blocked/running/bleeding nose), throat (eg tonsillitis, throat pain/discomfort, hoarseness of voice) and head/neck (eg neck lumps and swellings) problems. The vast majority of these patients had conditions which were effectively treated. A few were found to have complex problems and were referred to the respective sub-specialists for further treatment.

    • Can I walk in for an appointment or service?

We value your time as much as your health. We strongly advice that you make a prior appointment with our staff so our Ear surgeon can meet you on an allocated time. You may call or email us for an appointment.

    • What are your charges?

Our first consultation normally starts from $150 and financial counselling is available should further investigations and procedures are deemed necessary.
